Auction Types
High Bid - Seller has a single item for auction. Seller may or may not set a minimum bid. Bidders can bid any amount at or above the minimum bid. All subsequent bids must exceed the previous bid. At the close of the auction, the seller must sell the item to the highest bidder.
Dutch - Seller has Multiple, identical items for auction. Seller may or may not set a minimum bid. Bidders can bid any amount at or above the minimum bid for a specified quantity. At the close of the auction, highest bidders will win the available items at the price determined by the lowest successful bid. Bids are sorted in order of price, date and time, then quantity.
Yankee - Seller has multiple, identical items for auction. Seller may or may not set a minimum bid. Bidders can bid any amount at or above the minimum bid for a specified quantity. At the close of the auction the highest bidders win the available items paying exactly the amount they bid. (The same as Dutch Modern except that highest bidders pay exactly what the bid rather than paying the price determined by the lowest successful bidder.)
Sealed Bid - Seller has a single item for auction. All bids placed are concealed. At the close of the auction the highest bidder wins paying exactly the amount that was bid.
Vickrey - Seller has a single item for auction. All bids placed are concealed. At the close of the auction the highest bidder wins the item at the price determined by the second highest successful bid.
Reverse - Buyer posts what they are looking for along with a maximum price they are willing to pay. Sellers bid by making an offer. The offer contains a description of the item and its condition and a price that they are willing to sell the item for. Sellers can bid the price down to make the sale.
Reverse Yankee - Similar to Reverse except the buyer is looking for multiple, identical items.
Auction Styles
Reserve - A price that is set by the seller and not disclosed to bidders. If the reserve price is not met at the close of the auction the seller is not required to sell. During the auction it will state that it is a reserve auction and if that reserve price has been met.
Private - A bidder's identity and bid amounts will not be shown during the auction. Only the seller and the successful bidder will be notified via email when the auction closes. |
