Check your BillingAddress inner template, I see this buried in that error (god awful massive error that it is)

See what name is used for the @RenderZone(). In my default install, it's 'Right Sidebar'. Make sure that 'Right Sidebar' is also specified in the page layout for the page you're trying to render.

Can you share the steps to reproduce if this is consistently happening?

If not consistent, this may be because of the bot hitting with some invalid data.

Right Sidebar is in both places. I'll check the IIS logs for a bot. There's no way of telling from the error log. I don't know how to reproduce the issue, but you have given me an idea. They do have a Checkout link in the header that goes to this page, so maybe it's related to clicking that with an empty basket or a bot.

I found the issue with help of your suggestions. The site has a Checkout link in the header and clicking that redirects to the basket page when the basket is empty.
Clicking that link with an empty basket creates the error. I debugged locally and the error was:
System.Web.HttpException: Server cannot set content type after HTTP headers have been sent.
I had set the redirect according to this post:
https://www.ablecommerce...-nothing-in-basket-9-0-4
Is there a way to do this that will not cause an error to be generated?

Kind of related, when a category is private and you access it store side- customers do this because of picking up a link somewhere- it throws an error. Is there any way of getting around this error?

We have already a registered issue to tackle this kind of exception.

If possible can you please share the exact link that is generated in the header to access the checkout?
Or the lines of code in CheckoutController where the exception occurred.

The link in the header is ~/Checkout/EditBillAddress

I stepped through the code and it went through a lot of files but didn't throw an exception, although it registered an error in the error log. But while stepping through it, it did notice one more place where I needed to change return JavaScriptRedirect("~/Checkout/Basket", false); to JavaScriptRedirect("~/Checkout/Basket");
I had changed it in the EditBillAddress section, but another instance got hit in the ContinueCheckout() method. After I changed it there, the error wasn't thrown.
