It would be a great asset to have a message in red or whatever color to show up in the standard product template when using the (Disable Product From All Purchases option)under the Additional Settings tab.

This option just removes the Purchase Button and there is no way a customer can see that the product is out of stock. We can add the message manually, but it would be a nice to have this automated, without having to customize the template.

Thanks again.

Hi Ricky,

The setting to "Disable Product From All Purchases option" wasn't really intended for out-of-stock/inventory messages. Can I make a suggestion that requires no customization?

1. Go to the "Inventory Control" section of the product editing page.

2. Turn on "Track Product" for the Inventory feature (if not already).

3. Make sure the box for "Allow product to be purchased if out-of-stock" is unchecked.

4. Now, when the "In stock" value for a product reaches 0, an out-of-stock message will automatically appear and there will be no option to purchase.

5. You can configure the "Out of Stock Message" from the Configure > Store > General settings page.

Let me know if this will work for you.
Thanks for your support!

Hello Katie,

We use the inventory management option on all of our products that we stock parts on and the inventory setup you explain works great. Once inventory level reaches 0 then the out-of-stock message shows up and that works. You will also have a Low Inventory notification on the Admin Home Page (Action Items) as well (which is a Problem in our case for the one-off parts). The only way to remove the Message in Admin for a part is to either add stock on the part or disable Inventory on the part. Either option causes the Out-Of-Stock message to disappear and leaves the add to basket button to make a purchase.

Background: We have parts that are one Offs or will no longer be sold. We also have these parts listed in the search engines with good back links so we don’t want to lose those as well. So, our current process is disabling inventory, use the Additional Settings to (disable product from all purchases) and then we hide the product using the Visibility Option only allowing access by a direct link. This works great but we still end up fielding 20-30 calls a day on different parts asking why they cannot purchase a part. Some of these parts have been sold out and hidden for over 10 years. We have another .NET platform that automatically adds the message (This Product Is No Longer Available) when the Add to basket button is disabled no longer allowing purchases.

We have tried managing this manually for the last several years, but this is to much effort to keep up with and customers will not read notes in the description. So, we are asking if this can be added as a simple option. This could be accomplished when disabling the (add to basket button) or have another checkbox option that removes the add to basket button and publishes the Note: (This product is no longer available) i.e. while still hiding without losing backlinks.

Now if there is another way to accomplish this without adding code, then please let us know.

Thanks again for your response.
Ricky

This now makes total sense. It's a good example of a use case for this feature. I agree that the hiding of the button offers no explanation to the end user.

Yes, I will go ahead and add this to our features request log.

As far as a work-around...

You can create an inner template for this type of discontinued product. Create an HTML snippet with the "This product is discontinued" and place the snippet just below the Buy Product Dialog widget. It will have more visibility than being in the product description.

Thanks for your input and suggestion for improvement.

Katie, thank you again.

We will take a look at adding a new snippet for now.
